Distracted? And how. Beeped and pinged, interrupted and inundated, overloaded and hurried – that’s how we live today. We prize knowledge work — work that relies on our intellectual abilities — and yet increasingly feel that we have no time to think. For all our connectivity, we often catch little more than snippets and glimpses of one another.

Um, what were we talking about? Oh Yes!! Come focus on Maggie Jackson's talk based on her book Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age, which details the steep costs of our current epidemic deficits of attention, while revealing the astonishing scientific discoveries that can help us rekindle our powers of focus in a world of speed and overload.

It is a story told with all the inventive energy and wit Roth has at his command, at once a startling departure from the haunted narratives of old age and experience in his recent books and a powerful addition to his investigations of the impact of American history on the life of the vulnerable individual.

From Betty...

We chose this as our first Book Club classic as it is considered by many to be the premiere work of literature. And many think of Flaubert's Emma as utterly modern given her marital conflict, her choices and her outcome. Truly, a masterpiece.

The Condition

Thursday, October 2nd, at 7 pm
JENNIFER HAIGH - The Condition

Presentation, Discussion, Book-signing

Jennifer Haigh is the author of the bestselling Baker Towers, winner of the 2006 PEN/L. L. Winship Award for outstanding book by a New England author, and Mrs. Kimble, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award for debut fiction and was a finalist for the Book Sense Book of the Year. Both novels were number one Book Sense picks.

Jennifer Haigh's latest book is the intimate story of a New England family, beginning one idyllic summer on Cape Cod, before their life changes suddenly. Twenty years later their story picks up again and you get to know each member of the family, what motivates them, and how they communicate -- or don't -- with each other. I loved this book.
